So, how does a carpenter/photographer/musician/artist
thrive in the bookkeeping profession?

The truth is that I am a mix of equal parts creative and linear. I grew up in a family of intellectuals. My father drilled us with math problems at the dinner table, and my mother taught piano and trumpet.

My background includes a master’s degree in photojournalism, 14 years as a union carpenter and project manager, several years spent welding scrap metal sculptures, and a lifetime of music – singing and piano playing. Through all of that runs a keen attention to detail, linear thinking and problem solving, and an incredible ease with numbers and people.

When a carpentry work injury forced me to rethink my career path 15 years ago, I fell into bookkeeping and it fit me like a glove. I can use my creativity and communication skills to listen to my clients needs and help create better solutions for tracking their finances, record keeping, and budgets. After entering lists of numbers all day long, when everything balances out to the penny as it should, it feels like all is right with the world!
